Liturgy & the Mass
Choosing the day's optional memorial
Many weekdays offer an optional memorial — the parish may keep the saint, or may keep the ferial day. Vianney shows what is on offer and lets you say which one you are celebrating, so every screen tells the same story.
Choose one
- 1. Open Liturgy → Look Ahead and click the day.
- 2. Just under the day's title you will see Optional memorial: Saint N — each one a link. More than one may be offered.
- 3. Click the saint. The day wears it immediately: its title, its rank and its color all change.
- 4. To go back, click Switch back to … on the same line. The day returns to the ferial office.
The line also shows who made the choice, so nobody has to ask.
What happens to the readings
This is the part worth knowing.
- If the saint has proper readings printed, the day takes them, and the readings summary is rebuilt from those passages. It appears on the next repaint; the readings links work meanwhile.
- If the saint has only the Commons, the readings do not change — you keep the weekday readings, and Vianney tells you so in plain words when you choose.
- Unselecting falls straight back to the ferial day and its summary, which was never thrown away.
Where a saint has a proper, its citations are shown under the day's own readings as Proper of the memorial even before you choose anything — so you can see what you would be taking.
Good to know
- A solemnity or feast owns its day: there is nothing optional to choose, and Vianney will say so.
- One choice per day. Choosing a second saint simply replaces the first.
- Any staff member with Liturgy access may choose, and every choice and every switch back is written to the audit trail.
- The choice is the parish's, not the software's — nothing is ever selected on your behalf.
- Recording which readings you actually took at each Mass is a separate, deliberate step: see Recording which readings you chose.
